I've written about Mulligan before, but now I think I've decided on a direction. You see, while Veneficus came about from musings on game play, Mulligan was designed from musings on plot elements that I enjoyed. It's very much my love letter to the Mother/Earthbound series, and many of its elements are based off of those games. I feel that, after so many months and revisions, Vacation City became my Magnum Opus. I want to organize my thoughts on the story and setting of Vacation City, so here I go.
-Mulligan, WY, is a fledgling city in the middle of nowhere. It has a very small population, and is surrounded by many "interesting" locations.
-Nearby is Mulligan's Woods, a government-protected park. Was the first site of alien contact in the late '50s. The town is named after the forest, which was named after the farmer who owned them.
-Also nearby is Mulligan Army Base. It was established by the US Army in the early '60s as a front line of communications with alien lifeforms. Most personnel are unaware of this.
-Mulligan is also home to the Mulligan Natural History Museum and Library, formally Bloodmoon Manor, which was owned by one of Mulligan's most influential founders. A secret occultist, Sir Bloodmoon collected many strange artifacts from all corners of the world - artifacts that he felt had magical significance.
-Mulligan High School is a large, modern building that was built over an old prison. Some people claim to have seen spirits of executed prisoners wandering the halls at night.
-Mulligan has several farms surrounding it to the east, west, south, and south-west.
-Mulligan is NOT on Earth. Mulligan is on New Earth, a scientific experiment crafted by alien hands to test the effects of PKE (psycho-kinetic energy) on sentient beings - in this case, humans.
-New Earth has, at its core, a massive computer brain that operates the clockwork machinery that pumps PKE throughout the planet.
-The pipes intersect at key points on the planet's surface (called nodes). At these nodes humans have subconciously built their capitals and important structures.
-However, Mulligan is different...
-About 20,000 years ago, an alien prison ship took a shortcut through forbidden territory and came across New Earth, which was then uncharted. The ship had been followed by alien mafioso, who were bent on springing their godfather. They attacked the prison ship and, after rescuing their target, destroyed the ship. Many escape pods, filled with alien convicts, fell to New Earth...
-However, time isn't quite as strict as we think. Many years ago a technology called SimTime was invented, which allowed one to accelerate the passage of time locally, effectively speeding up time for certain objects injected with SimTime.
-New Earth had recieved a healthy dose of SimTime to accelerate it's progress - it beats waiting millions of years, huh? Anyways, because New Earth was in a state of advanced time proggression, the alien capsules falling to the surface landed not only on different continents, but in different times!
-About 1000 years ago, a capsule landed on a small town in Wyoming. The capsule contained a small - but dangerous - alien. A psychic devourer, which resembles a small rabbity critter, escaped from its containment grid and burrowed deep underground. This critter feeds off of PKE, and being so close to a node caused it to grow at an accelerated rate.
-800 years later, a secret organization of Oddfellows started up in the same area. They called themselves the SPS - the Secret Psychic Society. After so many millenia of exposure to PKE, humans had developed the ability to channel and form PKE into various forms, but only a few had learned how to do this, and they guarded this secret with their lives.
-The SPS formed to protect the world from the terrors that PKE had wrought. Animals who had absorbed too much became aware of their latent powers and waged a secret war against humanity. Certain humans would use their powers irresponsibly. Alien creatures that fell from the sky threatened humanity. The SPS would be New Earth's only line of defence - or was it?
-When New Earth was built it was staffed by a small group of humans charged with maintaining the internal systems. They were also charged with combating the gremlins (small angry creatures that pop up in complex machinery, and whose only goal in life is to destroy that machinery). They would go by many names, but they always worked behind the scenes, hiding the secrets of the world from outsiders. They now go by the Fraternal Order of Pipefitters (or FOPs). They possess a keen understanding of psionics and martial prowess, and have many hidden "maintenence rooms" around the world - including one in Mulligan.
-Fast-forward to the 1950s. The researchers had halted the SimTime injection and called for the Galactic Enforcers to go in and mop things up quietly. The Galatic Enforcers accidently drew the attention of the US government, who learned much more than they should have. However, the government decided to keep things under wraps and instead built a base to communicate with the Enforcers, and to supply them with aid - and in return for our cooperation, they give us some of their technology...
-However, the Psychic Devourer realised what was happening, and so it decided to do something about it. Reaching behind reality through astral projection, the beast tore several holes in the spacetime fabric (called warrens) and left chunks of its own claws (referred to as out-of-place-artifacts, or ooparts) in these warrens to keep them open. They quickly began to fill with the essence of the world around them, and prolonged the Enforcers' search.
-Today, an unfortunate high-school boy by the name of Soil Whitefeather was hit by a bus on his way home from the store. While he is out, he dreams of a magical place called "Vacation City". It is here that he will learn of the powers he possesses, and it is with this event that our story begins. He will learn of his family's legacy, uncover government conspiracies, join a secret society, learn the origins of his world (and the meaning of life), and ultimately save his world from destruction at the hands of its creators!
Whew. Quite a mouthful.
