Fun versus Entertainment

Another theory I've been tossing around is the concept of fun versus entertainment. They are not the same thing, as I will attempt to prove.

Games are intended as forms of entertainment, but most companies seem to mistake games for movies when it comes to deciding what's entertaining. I should begin this post by defining "fun" and "entertaining".

A game that is "fun" is a game that promotes interaction between player and environment. There is a heavy focus on gameplay.

A game that is "entertaining" is a game that captures a player's attention and imagination. There is a heavy focus on graphical prowess and narrative.

According to these definitions, Tetris would be Fun (as it is comprised of nothing but gameplay), but not Entertaining (as there is no narrative to hold the player's attention).
Final Fantasy would be Entertaining (as there is a strong story to hold the player's attention), but not Fun (as the player spends most of his or her time watching his or her character instead of being his or her character).
Kingdom Hearts would be both Fun and Entertaining (as it both involves the character in the game's narrative as well as having a strong and interesting narrative).
Staring at a Rock is neither Fun nor Entertaining.

So, this is more of a question of the game's narrative. But most videogame narratives fall under the category of Boring and Contrived. Very few games have interesting narratives, and even fewer of those allow the player to interact with those narratives in a meaningful manner.
